The 2025 BMW M5 will reportedly be priced at $259,900 before on-road costs, which is $13,700 less than the previous-generation M5 Competition.

According to BMW Australia, the new model, part of the G90-series, is set to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2024.

As noted, this version will feature plug-in hybrid technology for the first time, resulting in higher performance figures while simultaneously reducing tailpipe emissions.

Despite the price reduction, the new M5 is expected to be the most powerful model in the 40-year history of the series

Efficiency and Plug-in Hybrid Performance

The new-generation BMW M5 is the first in the lineup to incorporate plug-in hybrid technology, which enhances both performance and reduces emissions.

Efficiency Specs 2025 BMW M5
Fuel Economy (WLTP, battery charged) 1.6-1.7L/100km
Fuel Economy (WLTP, battery discharged) 10.2-10.3L/100km
Electric-Only Range (WLTP) 67-69km
Battery Capacity 18.6kWh high-voltage lithium-ion

While local fuel economy figures have yet to be released, these European estimates highlight the impressive efficiency gains provided by the hybrid system.

Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain Boosts Performance and Engine

The upcoming 2025 BMW M5 will retain the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, though it will feature the new ‘S68’ engine from the BMW XM SUV instead of the previous S63 unit according to the BMW group.

While the V8 itself produces 430kW and 750Nm, down 30kW compared to the M5 Competition, the addition of an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission boosts the total system output to 535kW and 1000Nm.

This makes the new M5 the most powerful in the model’s history, just below the 550kW figure of the XM Label Red, which remains BMW’s top-performance model.

With all-wheel drive, BMW claims the 2025 M5 can achieve 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, which is two-tenths slower than the previous M5 Competition.

This slight reduction in acceleration speed is mainly due to the M5 PHEV’s significant weight increase, now at 2435kg, which is 540kg heavier than the M5 Competition, largely due to its battery pack.

All Australian models will come standard with the M Driver’s Package, raising the top speed from 250km/h to 305km/h.

BMW claims the new M5 can travel up to 69km on electric power alone, thanks to its 18.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Additionally, anticipation remains high for the upcoming M5 Touring, which will mark the return of the M5 wagon since the E60/E61 generation ended production in 2010.
